architecture used to build an application based on Oracle Text. Our deployment approach gets the most out of Oracle Text allowing for easy, web-based definitions of document or web page sets, to be automatically indexed. Searching in these document sets is as easy as searching with
Yahoo or Google.

As a long-time database developer and DBA, I have come to understand that database performance tuning approaches and methods available to the DBA are substantially different from those available to the developer.
For example, while developers and designers operate mostly in test
environments and have full access to the application's source code, DBAs usually deal with a "frozen" application in a production environment. Thus, developers typically apply proactive tuning, while DBAs mostly do reactive tuning.
In reactive tuning mode it is crucially important to quickly organise
the work and find a solution for the performance problem. In order to achieve this, I usually apply a response time profiling method, which allows me to quickly find the location of the problem from an
architectural perspective, and then use "classical" response time
analysis to find the causes of the problem, if its location happens to be within the Oracle Database.
Using these simple methods, I have been able to identify causes and, on
many occasions, to propose solutions for acute performance problems in a matter of minutes.

Introduction to the new way Oracle is dealing with the performance tuning. The self-diagnostic engine features and usability will be presented and discussed (checked against "real-life" scenarios). The tool allows DBA easily and effectively fixing of the problems, by
filtering of the symptoms and concentrating on the root causes... and all of this without the need of  "workload replay". Additionally the Automatic Workload Repository (AWR), other useful advisors, alerts and integration with Oracle Enterprise Manager (EM) are covered.

JDBC provides database connectivity, either explicitly or under the covers, to plain old Java objects (a.k.a.POJO), as well as J2SE applications, J2EE components, Web services, ERP packages, O/R Mapping frameworks, and GRID Services. Oracle Database 10g aim at delivering the best-of-breed, faster, efficient, reliable, highly available, most J2EE/JDBC compatible, Web-services-enabled and grid-enabled JDBC drivers. The first part of this presentation gives an overview of the new features, including common re-architecture groundwork for all driver types; major performance enhancements; comprehensive support for standard JDBC 3.0 features; improved manageability and ease-of-use, tracing; functionally compatible type-2 and type-4 drivers; new database types and enhanced support for LOB and VARRAY; support for draft JDBC Web RowSet (JSR-114) for Web services; new Implicit Connection Cache and Fast Connection Fail-over; and touch on upcoming Transparent Session Migration for Grid computing. The second part describes in greater detail, the new, Implicit Connection Cache, which furnishes a transparent mechanism for using and managing data sources connections caches, eliminating the complexity/confusion involved in using and pooling data sources and the Fast Connection Failover, which, coupled with the RAC event notification mechanism provides an early data source connection failure detection and faster fail-over.
